Why We Must Teach Boys

Nov 13, 2009 By elinwaldal Leave a Comment

I agree wholeheartily with Raina Kelley in her article, Why We Must Teach Boys About Dating Abuse, it is imperative that preventing abuse starts with teaching. All children need tools to grab onto to help them navigate, be kind, make good choices. We live in an era where there are myriad messages being sent to young people, as parents, teachers, coaches, aunts, uncles, friends to our youth, we need to start sending clearer messages.

Raina writes “Surely, there must be a way to educate boys about violence outside of just repeating the mantra “Never, ever, hit a woman.” I don’t think that’s working”, no it isn’t. she continues to underscore the value of teaching respect. We teach by modeling, treating first our own children with respect and second by holding them accountable when they don’t act in kind. Kudos to Raina Kelley for speaking out on this subject
