Thanks to my friend Lois, over at Midlife at the Oasis, I learned about Jen Kehl’s, Twisted Mix Tape. Last week the theme was, Music that Tells a Story, I missed it. (Bummer.)
This week I am jumping in, the theme is, Your Cheating Heart–you know to honor all those achey breaky hearts out there.
Having been cheated on years ago, I have to say I still remember the feeling of pushing open the bedroom door to my then boyfriend’s room and catching him in the act–talk about hearing the needle on the record player scratch across the vinyl recorded love song with a cat screeching quality about it. I remember saying something, not sure what, but if I had to guess it probably was something like: Are you fucking kidding me? To which my peeled back eyes received the loud and clear message: Fucking yes, kidding no.
And so it goes. At that point in my life I had experienced far worse–clearly he was not worth my time.
There are lots of ways to cheat, some have drawn out affairs, others one night stands, and let’s not forget the emotional affairs, those count too. There are lots of ways to break a person’s heart, for some it’s over, while others work hard to mend. One thing is clear, there is no shortage of music that covers the subject of injured, if not lost, love.
First up is the Cover version of, Don Henley’s, Boys of Summer, remade by this marvelous (and somewhat new-to-me) band called, Bell X1. I love the images that are conjured in this song, I can feel the longing as the artist bleeds his feelings out, I can feel him reaching back in time as if warning himself that really, there is no going back.
Second is yet another cover, this time it is Evan Dondo singing Victoria Williams, Frying Pan. One of my favorite songs–I love this song because it shares way more than the breaking of an agreement, instead, it underscores the challenges of making a relationship work:
My third pick is the collaboration of Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow, singing, Pictures. Stirs one to think about the regret and loss that come with being unfaithful. What’s not to love about this duo?
Then there are the mental machinations that go along with love that remains even when the trust has been pulverized in, Linger, by the Cranberries:
Dido is one of my all time favorite artists, closing out my music mix with her (epic in my mind) song Quiet Times, makes me think of the resolve one needs to move on when a relationship is over–regardless of the reason for its demise.

“There are lots of ways to break a personβs heart” – there certainly are. This really stuck out to me because I think, even when you’re not in a romantic relationship with someone, they can break your heart. I’ve recently had mine stomped on by a friend, and in certain ways, it feels worse.
Love the songs. You have good taste in music!
Elin Stebbins Waldal says
That is so hard… agree too, that in ways it can be worse–all relationships have their own form of intimacy, which by default makes one vulnerable. I hate to think of your heart being ‘stomped’ Yours is such a brave heart, anyone who is careless with that? well it says way more about them than you.
And glad you liked the music picks. Sometimes I feel as if parts of my life are a series of motion pictures set to theme songs. Kind of modern day slide show meets video. π

These are just awesome, Elin! My favorite has to be the Don Henley cover. Loved that song when it came out, love this version of it.
Thanks for sharing them!

Oooohhhhh so glad you like it! The first time I heard it I literally had to pull over so I could write down the name of the band. Never have I been more grateful for digital display on Sirius!

I have a fascination, or maybe more like an obsession, with great cover versions of songs. The original Don Henley was good, bu I liked the Ataris cover just as much, the same way I enjoyed hearing the one you posted. The rest of your mixtape was just as awesome. I hope we’ll be seeing you on the blog hop again!
Elin Stebbins Waldal says
I have a similar obsession! Thanks also for mentioning Ataris, I had not heard of them. Thanks for stopping by and giving my mix a listen π
Lois Alter Mark says
Ooh, I love this list — Dido is one of my favorites too, and I love covers of great songs like Boys of Summer. Perfect!
JenKehl - My Skewed View says
Can I just say… wait WELCOME! I am so glad you joined us! Yea for Lois! I really hope you stay, mixtape is lots of fun and even though it takes me a while to get around to everyone I love hearing everyone’s music choices!
OK back to what I was going to say. I once mentioned in a mixtape that I had a boyfriend, who I actually named in the post, that cheated on me and broke my heart. I just remembered after listening to your mix that I used to listen to Linger over and over then. How weird. Hadn’t even thought of it until then.
OK next. Love Dido too! And thank you so much for the alternate version of Boys of Summer and the Evan Dando song I had not heard! This is why I love mixtape π
I hope you come back next week, it’s a confusing but fun topic!
Elin Stebbins Waldal says
Jen, this was so much fun! I definitely will be back! I can see why you love hosting Mixed Tape too, what a great way to discover more great music. Can’t wait to learn what the theme is for next week. π

That’s a great cover of “Boys of Summer” — wow, I love this band. Thanks for turning me on to them!
Elin Stebbins Waldal says
I think I had it on repeat for a week–frightening as that may sound–I never tired of it! Glad you like it. π

I love the music choices, but what I love more than the music is your approach to this topic. I love that you didn’t just post the classic break up songs, but that you looked at the whole of a relationship–the ebbs and flow, including the end. Most of these songs, I knew. “Boys of Summer” is one of my favorite songs, and this cover my top my love for Don Henley’s original. I hadn’t listened to any Evan Dondo before and this song is now going on my playlist. (Love the line “we walk the line.” So true in any long term relationship.) Love the Cheryl Crow and Kid Rock together. They are like salt and pepper; perfect compliments to each other. And Dido? Dido is always a hit in my world.
Elin Stebbins Waldal says
Oh I am so glad you love Frying Pan. It is for sure one of my favorites on a list of favorites that I could probably never count! And yes, salt & pepper is exactly right. I actually can’t wait for the next Mixed Tape challenge! Thanks Mary π
Stephanie says
Great list! I love “Boys of Summer” and had never heard that version, so thanks for that. π

Thanks for taking the time to listen Stephanie, glad you like the cover song too.
