How often do you find you relate to the words of a song? 
It seems to me that countless musicians have the uncanny ability of singing, what I think of as, some form of universal truth.
Today I am really missing Jen Kehl’s, Twisted Mix Tape Tuesdays.
TMTT was a blog hop where bloggers from all over would put together a blog post with songs embedded based on a theme — or more accurately put — Jen’s theme.
Jen had a way of creating themes that inspired me to search out songs I knew and weave them into a story. Stories that in a way shared a piece of me, but also spoke that universal language that resonated with so many. Although I only participated four times, today I miss her creative genius. And I miss her — set like a clock Tuesday blog hop — as if I had participated for years.
So today, in honor of Jen Kehl, I am choosing my own theme: Music that Speaks a Truth
First up is Tristan Prettyman. I love her song, Say Anything. Saying Anything takes courage. And when we are brave with our voice, we just might inspire another person to also be brave with theirs. This is what Tristan said about writing her song:
If I were to have my voice taken away, what would I want to say and who would I want to say it too. This song is about speaking your truth and being honest and keeping communication open, expressing how you feel and never being afraid to show that.”
Sharing your soul and who you are, opens a door, a door some have the strength to walk through, while others do not. We can only give what people are willing to receive. And you never know what another person will receive unless you are willing to be vulnerable and give your truth away.
Next up is Milky Chance singing his song, Stolen Dance. Opposite of Say Anything, this song begs us to keep quiet and feel. It’s an upbeat tune filled with longing and the desire to have one great love.
Music is well known for sharing heartache and this post would not be complete if I didn’t include a song about losing love in it. So hard to choose, but choose I must. After all…how can I possibly resist this lyric…

So funny, my soul sister, that I was thinking about – and missing – Jen and Twisted Mixtape Tuesdays this week, too. This is awesome because I love being introduced to new music by people whose tastes I trust and share – which would be you. The only one I know here is Tristan Prettyman. Downloading the rest now. Growing up my dad LOVED classical music; mom loved swing. My brothers loved rock, blues and jazz and I love it all.
So of course I love learning about new music that I am not familiar with. Mixed Tape sounds like fun, and so was this.
I couldn’t help but try to think of my own theme and realized that it might take me weeks to come up with just the right mix of music, and then, only a theme for one part of my life because my entire life is made up of so many different chapters it’s mind boggling. But then, maybe THAT should be the theme…and…and…so it goes….
Thanks for sharing this music. I’m listening to the first track now. Love her voice. And I have often thought that songwriters are truly blessed. How wonderful to be able to weave music and words together to touch others.
As a wise woman predicted I AM all over this one too! I love your choices. I have never heard of Susie Suh. What I love most about that song and the “video” is the graphic and the fact that it does not change. If you look down the path as she sings (in that haunting voice) she takes you there doesn’t, she?
I love Tristan Prettyman, the song you chose, and the whole concept of 1 Mic 1 Take! I am going to look for some more now! I know Jen did this so well but maybe we should resurrect at least a piece of Mix-Tape – of course being respectful to Jen all she did to masterfully create the blog hop!
